No matter what happens throughout each year, the month of October always seems to be my favorite. The days may start to get shorter and our schedules may become more full, but it is worth it. Chilly nights, apple picking, falling leaves, bonfires, and scarf weather are just some of my fall favorites.
It’s also that time of year I start pulling up seasonal totes from the basement. Last week when I went downstairs to grab a few, I was quickly reminded of how much Halloween stuff we actually have. Where did all this stuff come from? It’s like it multiplies as it sits in the basement for 11 months.
Obviously, each year when I start buying Halloween decor, I forget just how much we already have. I can’t help myself though. The minute we walk through Walmart and I start seeing the Halloween themed products and the season aisle covered in orange and black, I am compelled to start purchasing things. Home decor, candy, anything that celebrates the holiday; it all ends up in my cart.
Once we slowly start to get decorations hung, the front porch covered in pumpkins, and the fake cobwebs strung throughout the house, I stare at the mountain of candy I have already purchased. I am sure I already have way more than I will need for ‘trick-or-treat’ers. It’s definitely too much to just keep around the house. What better way to use some of it than to give it others? As a fun surprise for friends, I put together some BOO Kits.
How to Make a BOO Kit
Supplies:
- You’ve Been BOO’d Card (print out here)
- We’ve Been BOO’d Sign (print out here)
- Variety of candy (tip: purchase a large bag such as MARS Mixed Minis 240 count and Wrigley Monster Stash 315 count)
- Variety of 8oz soda Halloween cans (available: Canada Dry, A&W, Sunkist®, and/or 7UP®)
- White gift bags
- Ghost Face Printable (print out here)
- Scissors
- Tissue paper
- Glue or double-sided tape
Starting by cutting out the ghost face of your choice. The printable sheet I made has a variety of eyes and mouths to pick from. Attach the cutouts to one side of the gift bag.
Next, add in a variety of different candies and a couple Halloween cans of soda.
Top the bag with tissue paper. Cut the We’ve Been Boo’d sign out and fold the You’ve Been Boo’d greeting card and glue (or tape) together the greeting card. Add the sign and card to complete the bag.
Once the bag is created, it’s time to secretly gift it to friends, neighbors, co-workers or family. It can be left on porches, desks, or anywhere to surprise someone!
If you want to make it extra special, you can also add in a homemade dessert.
Halloween Recipe – Mini Phyllo Bites
This is also a great recipe for using up some of the chocolate candy.
Ingredients:
- 1 package of frozen mini phyllo cups (15 count)
- Variety of chocolate candy bars (I used SNICKERS®, TWIX®, MILKY WAY®, & 3 MUSKETEERS® from the MARS Mixed Minis bag)
- 3/4 cup chocolate morsels (divided: 1/4 cup and 1/2 cup)
- 1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk
- Halloween sprinkles
Take 1/2 cup chocolate morsels and melt in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring each time. Carefully dip each phyllo cup into the melted chocolate and then into the sprinkles. Place on a baking sheet.
Once all are dipped, place them in the freezer to set the chocolate for about 10-15 minutes.
In the meantime, chop about a half of a cup of chocolate bars. Remove the cups from the freezer and put chopped candy in each one.
Next, put the 1/4 cup chocolate morsels and condensed milk in the microwave. Heat for about 1 minute and stir until smooth. If needed, put back in the microwave at 15 second intervals, stirring between each. You can also melt the mixture in a small saucepan on the stovetop.
Once smooth, spoon the chocolate mixture into each cup.
Finish the bite-sized cups by adding a small piece of chopped chocolate bars and sprinkling finely chopped TWIX® bars on top. Place back in the freezer for about 10 minutes.
The dessert is great for parties, gifts, or just to use up some of the candy you may have.
