Managing to Eat Breakfast with No Time to Sit Down

My mornings focus on two things: feeding my kids and cleaning. While they eat, I do a quick clean up of anything that didn’t get taken care of the night before. After that we are busy doing activities and other household chores. Then around 9 -10am, almost daily, I find myself hungry. I forgot to eat something for breakfast. It can easily ruin my day.

Managing Breakfast for Myself

I know breakfast is a pretty important meal, and that’s why it is my priority to get my little ones fed in the morning. However, I often neglect myself and forget to eat. While my kids are seated quietly around the table eating their breakfast, that is my time to clean up the kitchen, get the dishwasher unloaded or loaded, take the trash out, etc. It is the best time I have to clean quickly and efficiently.

But that leaves me no time to eat. Some days are so hectic, it’s almost 11am when hunger hits me like a freight train. By that time I am already thinking about what I am going to make the boys for lunch. Since becoming a mom, it’s easy to put my needs aside for my kids. It’s easy to forget to take care of myself. It’s easy to go hours without realizing that I have not had anything to eat. One of my goals this year is to make time to focus on taking care of myself and make sure I am happy and healthy, as it is best for the whole family in the long run.

One way I have been making sure to eat breakfast was recently inspired through a great tip. It is one of those things that make you think, ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’. Simply putting cereal in a mug can make my favorite breakfast more mobile. The handle allows me to easily carry it around the house and not have to sit down to eat.

After the kids finish eating and the kitchen is spotless (ok, maybe not spotless), I can put my breakfast in a mug. Now it is easy to take into the living room or upstairs to the preschool area. While the kids are doing activities and games, I can sneak my breakfast in without having to sit down and take a break. It is a win-win situation that has allowed me to avoid the 10am reminder that I forgot breakfast.

A Breakfast Walkabout

Bonus: It also helps with portion control because a mug is smaller than most cereal bowls.

I can relate! I get very frustrated with myself when I let breakfast slip by, such an easy way to kick start your metabolism! I’ll have to fill my mugs with something other than coffee = )
