Keeping up with three boys is one thing, but keeping up with the house cleaning is another. There is always something being tracked in from outside, spills from the unknown and all kinds of things that get caked into the carpets daily.
When we had our house built, the one thing we decided not to update was the carpet. We have 3 little ones and I knew it would get it’s fair share of wear and tear with all the household traffic. Even though it isn’t the top of the line carpet, my need to constantly clean is strong. I want it to last as long as possible, even with the kids and dog running around crazy.
With all my cleaning, one household must-have is 20 Mule Team® Borax. It’s found down the laundry aisle with “additives”, at retailers, including Walmart. Yes, it is commonly in the laundry room, however it’s also a multi-purpose cleaner that everyone should have, as it can be used in a variety of ways.
Borax is an ‘all-natural’ product that helps removes stains and neutralizes odors. Just a few ways it can be used around the house:
- Helps clean pots and pans
- Helps clean sinks and countertops
- Laundry booster (softens water and enhances detergent performance)
- Helps get rid of mattress odors
- Helps deodorize garbage cans

Using Borax to Help Clean Carpets
I use Borax two ways to help clean my carpet. The first way is to do an overall deep clean.
First, vacuum the carpet to remove all the loose dirt and debris.
Mix 1/2 cup Borax with 2 cups hot water. Stir and pour into the detergent part of the carpet cleaner. I have a pressurized carpet cleaner that it works great in.
Use the cleaner as usual, per the manual and the carpet will have a fresh look.
Borax also helps clean spots on the carpet.
See those black spots where the arrows are? Those are common around here when the kids are sneaking around with milk or juice. When I notice it, I simply mix up the same mixture as above, but half the amount.
- 1/4 cup Borax
- 1 cup hot water
Combine the Borax and hot water, mixing with a spoon. I use a mason jar, which makes it easier getting the rag wet.
Add mixture to a clean white rag and blot the spot. Don’t over-saturate the carpet though.
Let the mixture set for about 30-40 minutes. Use clean hot water and a new clean rag, and blot the mixture up. If necessary, use a dry towel to blot the water.
Maintaining clean carpets isn’t the easiest thing to do in a hectic household with three kids and a dog, but having Borax and hot water definitely helps.
