It’s no secret; themed activities and snacks are a huge hit around my house. It gets the kids excited and gives me the opportunity to get creative with our activities and food. Our most recent theme was one of my favorites: The Land Before Time family movie night.

I really enjoy letting the kids pick out our movie selection for family movie nights. However, there are times I surprise the kids with classic movies from when I was once a child.

That’s why The Land Before Time got it’s own movie night last weekend. Since the boys really didn’t know much about the movie, I went for a simple, but fun, dinosaur themed night. I can never go wrong with an activity and snacks.  We started by making our own dino tracks with potatoes.

Making the dino tracks isn’t as hard as it sounds.

I cut a large potato in half, giving me two potential stamp surfaces.

Using a small sharp knife, such as a paring knife, carve a dinosaur footprint. Push the knife down about a half an inch or so. It is better to go a little deeper than not.

Next, cut around the outside of the potato about a half an inch down, pushing through to about where you have the outline carved. Carefully pop out the outside pieces, around the footprint outline. Pat dry any excess moisture from the potato.

Now we have a quick & easy dino footprint for the kids to make dinosaur tracks with.

I poured a little brown paint on a paper plate (easy clean up) and let the kids make dino tracks on their own small paper snack bags.

They also spent a lot of time making tracks across paper.

What I didn’t expect was how it would open their creative imaginations. Within a few minutes they were telling stories about where their ‘dino’ was going and what it was doing as they made tracks.

While that dried, it was time to make the popcorn mix.

No movie night is complete without Pop Secret popcorn. With our family of 5, I often grab the 10 pack value size when shopping at Walmart.

I popped up a couple of bags of the Homestyle popcorn. Then, to go with the dino theme, I added fun chocolate rocks. Some of the larger candy even looked like dinosaur eggs.

The boys helped mix it all up and by that time the paint was dry on their custom-made snack bags.

We turned on The Land Before Time, snuggled up on the couch and munched on our popcorn mix for the rest of the evening. Being able to watch one of the movies I loved as a kid with my boys was a great way to make family memories.
